High School Curriculum
A high school curriculum is a collection of courses set forth for a student to complete in order to matriculate. Most states mandate the high school curriculum for their public schools. A high school curriculum usually includes a general course of study in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Sometimes public schools or public charter schools offer a specialized high school curriculum for advanced students or students with special skills. Even in the specialized high school curriculum, most states will mandate a core high school curriculum.
Some states allow private schools to mandate their own high school curriculum, or at most mandate that each private school must include a minimal core high school curriculum. For instance, in the state of Texas, private schools are only required to include a bona fide high school curriculum of reading, writing, arithmetic, and good citizenship in order to comply with the state education laws. In addition, since home schools in Texas are private schools, they too are only required to have a bona fide high school curriculum identical to that of other private schools. Texas allows any parents to home school their children under these rules.
Other states, like Colorado, allow parents to decide their own high school curriculum as long as they subject themselves to an umbrella school for yearly testing in whatever courses the parents choose to teach. These umbrella schools are usually distance education providers that offer core high school curriculum classes. The most affordable distance education high school in America is Continental Academy. ContinentalAcademy.com offers an online high school curriculum that is regionally accredited. A high school diploma from the home study program at ContinentalAcademy.com will afford students admission into the military as well as trade schools, community colleges, and some universities. Completing the entire high school curriculum at ContinentalAcademy.com will only cost a student $450.00.
