Indiana's Graduation Qualification Exam

In order for a student to graduate from high school in Indiana, one must first complete and pass the Graduation Qualification Exam (GQE). This exam was created in response to No Child Left Behind. Taking and passing this test ensures that students have the core skills that are necessary to succeed in the workplace or college.

The GQE covers the Indiana requirements in English and mathematics. The English portion of the test covers all that a student should know through the ninth grade. Mathematics covers materials through the eighth grade in addition to the first year of Algebra. Students take the tests in the fall of tenth grade. The GQE is administered over 3 days and will take a total of 6 hours to complete. All students must be present as there are no make ups for this test. Retakes, however, are available and students need only retake the areas that they have not passed.

Fulfilling The GQE Requirements

Indiana has actually made it a little easier to pass the GQE than other states tests. There are four different ways one can fulfill the requirement. The most obvious way to meet the requirement is to pass the GQE tests. A student can also meet the requirement by completing a Core 40 diploma. This requires the student to receive at least a C in all of the required and elective classes. The student must also receive a recommendation from the principal to complete the Core 40 program.

If the Core 40 program cannot be passed, students can receive an evidence-based waiver as long as they have an attendance record over 95%, have a C average, fulfill all other graduation requirements, and have written recommendations from teachers. Otherwise, those with difficulties can go for a work-readiness waiver, similar to the evidence-based waiver without needing to complete the core curriculum geared towards a career.
