Obtaining a high school diploma can be difficult for some people. If you have dropped out, it can be very difficult to go back to school including because you don't have time or are afraid of going back. But there are other ways to accomplish this. One can pursue a General Equivalency Diploma or GED rather than a diploma.
A GED is seen as the equivalent of a high school diploma. In some instances, a GED will not take the place of the diploma, but in a lot of cases, it will. Possessing a GED will show potential employers you have the necessary skills for the job. You may also be required to complete the SAT or ACT as well if you wish to use your GED to attend college.
Why Was The General Equivalency Diploma Created?
The GED was created in the 1940s when many military personnel were returning from the war. Many of these soldiers left for the war prior to completing high school and needed a way to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent. Today, GED tests are often taken by people who have immigrated, people dropped out of high school or were home schooled.
GED tests are available in several languages including English, French, and Spanish to allow for a wide spectrum of people to receive this diploma. Tests and preparation are offered in a wide variety of places as well. GED tests are offered in prisons, military bases, and other areas that have a high rate of people who have not graduated high school. GED tests are available in the United States as well as Canada.
